Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry Sedation dentistry involves performing dental treatment on a patient in an environment that’s stress- and anxiety-free. It’s a way for dentists to help patients overcome common dental phobias. Many people neglect going to the dentist or getting their teeth taken care of because of this phobia. Often, dental problems are left unattended till the very last moment when extreme measures are needed. Through sedation dentistry, patients are able to undergo dental treatments without any of the fear and anxiety that accompanies the treatment. Moreover, sedation dentistry reduces the number of visits required for dental treatment to just a couple of sessions. Sedation dentistry can be used to correct almost any kind of dental condition.

Nitrous oxide sedation

In one form of conscious inhalation sedation, nitrous oxide gas (also known as laughing gas) is used to induce a state of relaxation. A local anesthetic will be administered in combination with nitrous oxide sedation to eliminate pain.

Intravenous sedation

Like oral sedatives, intravenous (IV) sedation does not provide pain relief, so an injection of local anesthetic will also be administered in conjunction with this method of dental sedation.

Advantages

People who experience dental phobia avoid visiting the dentist even with really bad problems with teeth. The phobia may have been caused by bad experiences from previous visits to the dentist who treated their patients poorly. Nowadays, dental fears can be considered a thing of the past with the development of sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry can help patients become relaxed and comfortable during the entire treatment.

Many people confuse sedation with anesthetics but the use of general anesthesia during dental treatments is not considered sedation dentistry. However, there are certain forms of sedation that could raise a person's pain tolerance. The concept behind sedation is to use sedatives such as tranquilizers, depressants, and nitrous oxide to induce a relaxed state. Many reading materials about sedation dentistry call it "sleep dentistry" but the term sleep can be misleading. Though sedation can make a person feel sleepy, the patient is kept awake during the whole treatment but while under the effects of sedatives, the patient feels completely relaxed and comfortable. The patient is made to feel very comfortable and relaxed that they would feel they've slept through the whole procedure because of the nature of sedation. If you are having trouble trusting your dentist, make sure to bring a trusted friend or family member with you

As mentioned above, one of the advantages of sedation dentistry is that it allows patients to feel like the treatment only took minutes to finish instead of the long hours that actually passed. This makes it perfect for patients with dental fears since it addresses most of the issues that keep them from visiting the dentist. When handled by professional sedation dentists, the process is completely safe and reliable. It would still be best to have someone you trust accompany you before and after the treatment particularly because of the nature of sedation treatments. There are also several sedation methods that will not require injections to perform. These "no needle" approaches are preferred by patients who are afraid of the needle.
