Bridges

The perfect way to replace missing teeth.

The problem

Bridges are recommended when there are one or more teeth missing that affect:

  • Your smile and appearance.
  • Your bite, as a result of adjacent teeth leaning into the space and altering the way the upper and lower teeth bite together.
  • Your speech.
  • The shape of your face.
  • The rates of gum disease and tooth decay as a result of food accumulated in the gap.

The solution

Dental Bridge 1. Traditional fixed bridge
This is the most commonly used type of bridge and consists of a pontic fused between two porcelain crowns that are anchored on neighbouring teeth or implants. The pontic is usually made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. These are fixed and cannot be removed.

2. Resin-bonded bridges or Maryland-bonded bridges
These are chosen when the gap to be filled is in between the front teeth, or when the teeth on either side of the missing tooth are strong and healthy without large fillings. The false tooth is made of plastic and is fused to metal bands that are bonded to the adjacent teeth using resin that is hidden from view.

3. Cantilever bridges
These are opted for in areas such as the front teeth that are susceptible to lower stress. Cantilever bridges are used when there are teeth present on only one side of the space, where the false tooth is anchored to one or more adjacent teeth on one side.

Advantages

Dental bridge procedure can be carried out for various reasons. A missing tooth can not only change your look and the beauty of your smile, but can also affect chewing. It can cause shifting of the adjacent teeth and cause temporomandibular joint disorder as well. The gap left behind by a missing tooth can also trap food debris, and thereby raises the risk for developing periodontal diseases and tooth decay. For all these reasons, filling up the gap or replacing the missing tooth is very important, and dental bridge is one of the most popular methods for doing so.

Dental bridge can restore the appearance of a full set of teeth, besides improving your smile. However, a bridge is not as permanent as dental implant. But, dental bridge can last for 10 to 15 years or longer than that, if good oral hygiene is maintained. Moreover, it is less expensive and takes less time than dental implant. Dental implant on the other hand, is an invasive method that involves surgery, and therefore, is more time consuming than dental bridges.

Disadvantages

Dental bridges can sometimes, bring about certain changes in your teeth. An increased sensitivity to both hot and cold temperatures is such a change, and it is one of the most commonly faced problems by individuals, after this dental procedure.

The cost of dental bridge procedure is another important factor that needs to be taken into account while opting for this procedure. This dental procedure is quite expensive, though it is comparatively less expensive than dental implants. Another disadvantage of this procedure is that the cemented bridge may sometimes become loose. Considerable loosening of the bridge can result in the failure of the anchoring teeth. However, this problem is more frequent in the case of bridge supported by natural teeth. Bridges supported by implants can overcome this shortcoming.
